Situated on the southeastern edge of Yungui Plateau, Qiandongnan Miao & Dong Autonomous Prefecture is close to Hunan province to the east, connecting Guangxi to the south and adjacent to Qiannan and Tongren. Covering an area of 30337.1 square kilometers, it stands 220 kilometers from east to west and 240 kms from south to north. With the west high and the east low, the highest is 2178 meters above the sea level and the lowest is 137 meters.
This place features magnificent mountains, elegant streams, warm weather, abundant resources and deep folk customs. The prefecture contains 16 counties & cities and 1 provincial level economic development zone including 90 towns, 116 villages, 5 street offices, 89 resident committees, 68 community committees and 3226 villager committees. Kaili , the capital of Qiandongnan Miao & Dong Autonomous Prefecture, is the center of politics, economy and culture. It is less than 2 hours drive from the Guiyang Longdongbao International Airport as connecting the expressway of Guiyangcity.
There are 33 nationalities including Miao, Dong, Han, Buyei, Yao, Tujia, Zhuang, Sui, ect. It has a total population of 4,417,200 , of which 81.87% is the minorities, 42.09% is the Miao nationality and 31.86% is the Dong nationality. It is named by the United Nations as an important natural and cultural area and is known rather poetically as "the last ballad of humankind and the homeland for exhausted souls".
It abounds in mineral resources with a wide variety and rich reserves. There are 47 kinds of mineral resources ascertained in Qiandongnan including barite, mercury, coal, iron, manganese, antimony and so on.
The subtropical wetness climate makes it not cold in winter and not hot in summer. The annual mean temperature is between 14 and 19 degrees centigrade. The annual mean precipitation is 1000-1600 mm. The period of frost-free is long and lasts 260-220 days. Despite tough conditions for transportation, Southeast Guizhou is definitely an ideal area to experience the spectacularly distinctive folk customs and minority life amongst the picturesque limestone hills.
