Overview

Qianxinan Buyi and Miao Autonomous County is located in the southwest of Guizhou province, at the bordering region where three provinces of Guizhou, Guangxi Zhang Autionomous Region and Yunnan meet. The Nanpan River that flows by belongs to the Pearl River system (the third largest in China, just next to the Yangtze and the Yellow River). Set up on May 1, 1982 (one of the most recent among the 30 minority nationality autonomous counties in China), it is home to 33 nationalities like Han, Buyi, Miao, Yi and Hui etc. Qianxinan covers a land area of about 16,804 square kilometers; the highest point in the territory is 2,207.2 meters above the sea level while the average altitude of the whole county is 275 meters. By the end of 2004 the total population had reached 3.09 million, among which, 42.47% are minority nationalities. The postal code and regional telephone number are 562400 and 0859 respectively.

In this area there exist a great number of historical relics and natural scenic wonders. Besides the folk living customs marked by strong ethnic features, unique local special products and local delicacies, national festivals and celebrations, performances and arts are all of great interest to visitors. On this gorgeous and mysterious land there spread vast karst topography that consists of valleys, caves, waterfalls, underground rivers and stone forest. The most significant local attraction - Maling River Scenic Zone ranks at the top national level. Besides four other scenic zones, namely, the Zhenfeng Sancha River, Anlong Zhao Dam, Xinyi Nishui Stone Forest and Lubuge Valley, are at the provincial level. Qianxinan is therefore recognized as a brilliant tourist gem in southwest China whose charms are derived from not only its picturesque natural landscape, but also historical relics and unique national living customs of the local minority nationalities.
