Overview
Rizhao gets its name from a line which says, "the place which is shined first by the early sunlight of the rising sun", and has a nickname as the "Oriental Sun City". As a coastal ecological city, Rizhao is known in the world for its "blue sky, green sea, and golden beach." Here you may find a good eco-environment with beautiful natural scenery and agreeable climate, which makes Rizhao a great place for summer time and holidays. In 2003, Rizhao is granted the honor of "Chinese Excellent Tourist City". Rizhao has a very convenient transportation for tourism. The road and railways in the city are very developed and they reach out to all the places in China. Rizhao is surrounded by 4 airports: Qingdao, Lian-yun-gang, Linyi and Weifang which are all within 90 minutes' drive from Rizhao. Rizhao is very rich in tourism resource, including the sea, the mountain, the forest, and the ancient. The length of the high-quality beach is 64 km compare against the 100 km seashore inside Rizhao, and is praised by experts as the "only un-polluted golden seashore in China." You may find famous tourism attractions here, including the Olympic Water Sports Park, Wulian Mountain Scenic Spot, and Fulai Mountain Scenic Spot in Juxian County. It has the world's largest Chinese character petroglyph - the two huge characters, "Ri Zhao" (Chinese for Sun Shine), the gingko trees of Fulai Mountain - "the NO.1 Gingko Tree under Heaven", the largest green tea base north of the Yangtze River, the largest bamboo growing belt, and the largest wild azaleas growing belt. Rizhao is also an important cradle of Longshan Culture. Based in the fishing families living along the coast, some tourist products have been developed such as the folk-custom tour, "Yu Jia Le" - tourists may live in the fishermen's houses, eat meals of the fishing home style, go to the seashore at ebb tide to pick up small sea lives, go out fishing in the sea with the fishermen on their boats, which has attracted numerous tourists to come.
