Tongchuan is located in the middle part of Shaanxi Province, in the transition zone between Guanzhong Plain and Huangtu Plateau. It covers an area of 3,882 sq km. The population of the city amounted to 835,600 by the end of 2007. The city tree is the wattle, and the city flower is the rose, while the city bird is the wood thrush.







Tongchuan is rich in natural resources. Reserves of coal amount to 2.6 billion tons, with the output accounting for approximately one third of Shaanxi Province's total, while reserves of loess and refractory clay also ranked first among all the cities in the province.







Tongchuan has a warm temperate continental climate with a hot summer and a cold winter. The average temperature is 8.9-12.3 Celsius. The average annual precipitation reaches 300-400 mm, while the average annual sunshine totals to 2,345.7-2,412.5 hours.







Tongchuan boasts a profound history. In the Xia and Shang Dynasties, Tongchuan belonged to the Yong State. During the Han Dynasty (155 B.C.), Tongchuan became a county. In 2000, Tongchuan was approved by the State Council to be a prefecture-level city.







Tongchuan is rich in historical and cultural landmarks as well as beautiful natural scenery. There are 675 heritage attractions including several that are under state- and provincial-level protection. Top attractions include Yaozhou Kiln Museum, Yuhua Palace Ruins and Yaowang Mountain Stone Cave.







When it comes to snacks in Tongchuan, Hele, which is vermicelli made of buckwheat, is very popular among local people and is cheap and delicious.
