Overview

Tongren Prefecture lies in the northeast of Guizhou Province. As an inland mountainous area endowed with favorable geographic conditions and rich natural resources, Tongren Prefecture has great potential for development. Thanks to its mild climate and abundant rainfall, its agriculture develops quite well, which makes it known as “a fertile land of fish and rice” on Guizhou Plateau. There are lots of scenic spots and historical sites in Tongren, including Fanjing Mountain, Jiulong Cave, Jinjiang River, Three Gorges of Wujiang River, and Shiqian Hot Spring, etc.

In Tongren Prefecture live 25 ethnic groups including Han, Dong, Tujia, Miao, Yao and Hui, all having their distinctive folk customs. For example, the Dong people have their distinctive wedding ceremonies such as “singing overnight” and “walking about hills and villages”. The Tujia People have their distinctive dining style of “wine drinking accompanied by tofu broken bits”. The Nuo culture of Tongren Prefecture is regarded as a national cultural legacy and Nuoxi (Nuo Dance Drama) is renowned as “the living fossil of Chinese drama culture.”
