The adminitrative division form of Urumqi is Municipality, which is one of the four administrative divisional forms at the the second level of China local administrative division system .
Municipality is also referred to as a prefecture level city (地级市). Most of Chinese big cities belong to this variety.

Overview



Urumqi, whose name means "beautiful pasture" in the Mongolian language of the Dzungar people, is the capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and the largest city in the northwest of the country, also the center of politics, economy, culture, science and technology in Xijiang province.


Located at the north of Xijiang, northern foot of Tianshan, southern margin of the Juggar Basin, Xinjiang, has one-sixth of Chinese territory, an important gateway to West and the starting point of New Eurasian Continental Bridge in western China, furthermore, Urumqi lives more than 47 ethnic groups for has been an important town on ancient Silk Road, mainly in Han, Uygur, Kazak, Hui, Mongolian. As an inland city farthest away from ocean in the world, Urumqi belongs to the Continental Arid climate, so the best tourism times are August and September, when the weather is temperate and the fruit is mature then.


Urumqi is proud of its natural scenery, ethnic style, travelling spots, delicious cuisine and comprehensive facilities. From the ice, snow covered mountains, lush pastures to vast desert scenery; all of these will certainly give you a big surprise and visual shock.
