Overview



Zhangjiakou City, about 180 kilometers from downtown Beijing, share borders with Beijing, Shanxi Province, and Inner Mongolia. Zhangjiakou city is nicknamed as " Mountain City north of the Great Wall" due to its rolling land formation. It governs four districts and 13 counties, with total area about 37.000 sq. km. The population of Zhangjiakou City is about 4.5 million.





Zhangjiakou is easy to accessible because the developed transportation network consisting of railways, highways. Fourr railways: the Jingbao(Beijing to Baotou), Fengsha(Beijing to Shacheng), Daqin(Qinghuangdao to Dalian) pass through the city. Expressways connect Zhangjiakou with Beijing and many other places in China. There is a special bus service commuting between Beijing and Zhangjiakou City once every half an hour, which departs at 6:00 am at Xizhimen Bus Station of Beijing.





There are many ancient sites in and around Zhangjiakou City. "Dajingmen of Ancient Great Wall" is the strategic pass on the Great Wall and is also regarded as the symbol of Zhangjiakou City. The mausoleum groups of Han Dynasty in Daiwang Town of Wei Xian County, mausoleum groups of Han Dynasty in Huaian County, the mural painting in the mausoleum of Liao Dynasty, and some attractions in the urban area, such as Shuimu Palace, Yunquan Temple and Qingyuan Storied Building, are worth a visit. One attraction worth a special mention is the Zhongdu natural grassland. Located in the north of Zhangjiakou City, it is not far away from Beijing, and therefore become a popular summer destination for travelers from Beijing. The grassland is cool in summer, which is the ideal place to escape summer heat. What’s more, visitors will have a chance to experience the custom of Mongolia Nationality.





Zhangjiakou saw China’s first railway-the Jingzhang Railway from Beijing to Zhangjiakou in 1909.
